"Azerbaijan is one of the countries most affected by landmines, with approximately 12% of our territory contaminated by 1.5 million mines and unexploded ordnance," the Chair of the Defence, Security and Counter-Corruption Committee of the Milli Majlis Arzu Naghiyev said during today's discussion of the draft law "On Mine Action" at the Committee's meeting, APA reports. The Committee Chair noted that more than 3,400 of Azerbaijan's citizens have been affected by landmines so far, 358 of whom are children: "The main issue is that Armenia has not provided maps of the mines it planted. Around 140,000 hectares of land have been cleared of ordnance and mines." Source: Azeri-Press News Agency
