Turkmenistan has discovered 149 gas and gas condensate fields with reserves of more than 4.97 trillion cubic meters of gas. Data on the development of the gas industry of the country's economy are published in the Turkmen press.

"149 gas and gas condensate fields with reserves of 4,970,768 million cubic meters have been discovered in Turkmenistan, including 139 fields on land and 10 fields on the Caspian shelf," the report says.

At the same time, 54 fields with a reserve of more than 2.6 billion cubic meters of gas are under development, 11 fields are prepared for development, 73 fields are under exploration and 11 are in conservation.

Gas production in the country is carried out by the state concerns "Turkmengas", "Turkmenneft" and the state corporation "Turkmengeology", while more than 80 percent of the total gas production falls on the share of "Turkmengas".

In terms of natural gas reserves, Turkmenistan is among the top four countries in the world along with Russia, Iran and Qatar. China is the largest buyer of Turkmen gas.
