Modernization of the irrigation system of Chui region requires 25 billion soms. Director of the Water Resources Service of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Sokeyev said.
According to him, repair of the irrigation network and construction of new hydraulic facilities are necessary to mitigate the effects of the drought.
«The low-water period can repeat. Nobody can predict it. Kyrgyzstan has every opportunity to resolve issues related to it. Construction of new facilities, reconstruction and cleaning of reservoirs in Chui region will require 25 billion soms. We have calculated it,» Almazbek Sokeyev said.
Director of the service cited as an example the siltation of Nizhnyaya-Ala-Archa in-channel reservoir with a volume of 72 million cubic meters and Nizhnyaya-Ala-Archa off-channel reservoir with a volume of 50 million cubic meters. Silting of the reservoirs, according to Almazbek Sokeyev, has led to a reduction in the volume of reservoirs by 20 million cubic meters.
According to the Ministry of Finance, 4.4 billion soms are provided for the expenses of the Water Resources Service in 2023. At least 1 billion soms is provided for the repair and restoration work of irrigation systems, of which 362.1 million have already been allocated.
