258 candidates for deputies have been registered for the elections to the Mejlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan, which will be held on March 26. The candidates were nominated by the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, the Agrarian Party of Turkmenistan and groups of citizens.
In accordance with the legislation of the country, after the registration of candidates for deputies, campaigning begins. Political parties, public associations, citizens of Turkmenistan, candidates, proxies of candidates have the right to campaign in forms and methods not prohibited by law, calling on voters to vote for a particular candidate. Candidates are guaranteed equal conditions during campaigning, which ends one day before election day.
The Mejlis of Turkmenistan consists of 125 deputies who are elected for a term of five years in constituencies with an approximately equal number of voters. A citizen of Turkmenistan who has reached the age of 25 and has been permanently residing in the country for the previous ten years can be elected as a deputy of the Mejlis.
Together with the elections to the Mejlis on March 26, elections of members of local representative bodies of power will be held.
