552 Women and 98 Men Held Accountable for Human Trafficking in Azerbaijan from 2005 to 2024

Baku: From 2005 to 2024, 552 women and 98 men have been held accountable for human trafficking, Zahid Oruj, the chairman of the Human Rights Committee, said during the discussion of the Annual Report of the National Coordinator on Combating Human Trafficking (2024) at the joint meeting of the Human Rights, Legal Policy, and State Building Committees of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan's Parliament), APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Zahid Oruj noted that in the previous year's report, the numbers were 541 women and 95 men. He stated that from 2005 to 2024, a total of 650 human traffickers have been brought to court, an increase from 636 last year. As for the penalties applied to human traffickers by the Serious Crimes Court, 1 individual received imprisonment, and 4 were given suspended sentences. The previous year's report indicated 11 imprisonment sentences. Regarding other crimes related to human trafficking, there are 15 individuals wanted for arrest, compared to 17 last year, and 15 individuals have been charged, compared to 6 last year.
