President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at a government meeting by video link signed a decree on the adoption of Turkmen citizenship of 863 stateless persons permanently residing in the country.
The document requires the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Migration Service, together with other departments, to continue work on the paperwork of stateless persons wishing to become citizens of Turkmenistan, with the subsequent introduction of proposals for consideration by the country's president.
By signing the decree, the head of state instructed Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Secretary of the State Security Council Yaylym Berdiyev to provide passports for new citizens of Turkmenistan for a month . Also, the khyakims (heads of administrations) of the velayats (regions) were instructed to organize the solemn handing of passports, and, if necessary, to help new citizens of the country with employment and housing.
Turkmenistan, as a member of the UN, strictly fulfills its obligations, and in accordance with the Constitution of the country, as well as various UN conventions on refugees and human rights, provides support to stateless persons, the head of state said.
