A special commission arrived in Turkmenistan to assess the potential of the Office of the Ombudsman

The expansion of international cooperation in the field of human rights was discussed at the meeting of Deputy Foreign Minister Vepa Khadzhiev with a special delegation of the Asia-Pacific Forum for assessing the potential of the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan. The meeting was held on October 4, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

At the meeting, they spoke about the active interaction of the Ombudsman’s office with the UN and its specialized agencies, as well as the OSCE .

“The Turkmen side informed about the distinctive activities of the Office of the Ombudsman, the results achieved during the period of its existence. The necessary measures were also announced to improve the capacity of the department and effectively fulfill its mandate,” the information message says.

Recall that on April 28, the UNDP office in Turkmenistan organized an  introductory meeting  to launch a five-stage event called “Capacity Assessment of the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan”, based on the results of which a Strategic Plan will be developed for the agency.

Then it was reported that a special team of experts from UN units would visit Turkmenistan in October to hold meetings with representatives of government agencies, organizations and public associations in Ashgabat and the velayats.

These events will help the Commissioner for Human Rights to promote and protect human rights in Turkmenistan, as well as positively influence the process of considering the office’s application for accreditation in the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions in 2023.
