Actions of France breaching international laws – Comorian delegate

BAKU: France's actions are violating international laws, the former Representative to the UN for Comoros, Mohamed Toihiri, said at an international conference organized by the Baku Initiative Group in Baku, Trend reports The above conference puts the spotlight on Mayotte, a French-controlled island. Toihiri claimed that France is thumbing its nose at a UN resolution demanding Mayotte's independence. 'France's actions are inconsistent with the constitution and contradict international law. The results of a global referendum on the archipelago showed over ninety-four percent in favor of independence. Despite the majority on the island once wanting to remain with France, international agreements necessitate considering the referendum's outcome, which was recognized by the United Nations,' he stated. To note, following Comoros' independence in 1976, France refused to acknowledge the UN resolution granting Mayotte independence. The conference, titled 'France's Illegal Occupation of Mayotte Island of the Union of the Comoros,' includes political figures, academics, human rights advocates, NGO leaders, and diplomats. Discussions cover the history of French colonization, the impact of Mayotte's occupation, and France's geopolitical and economic interests in the region, as well as international organizations' stances on Mayotte Island of the Union of Comoros.
