As has been previously reported, in connection with the economic slump flea markets selling second-hand clothes and other used goods have become popular in recent years in Turkmenistan. Radio “Azatlyk” reports that about a week ago a flea market appeared in one of the residential district of the city of Turkmenabat. On 4 October, 2020 police officers tried to disperse vendors. However, according to the Radio, outraged vendors formed a big crowd to head to the building of the velayat’s administration. “Residents expressed discontent and shouted that they have neither groceries nor money to buy food”, “Azatlyk” says and added that the inhabitants of the nearby apartment buildings joined the vendors. Some of the protesters threatened to set themselves on fire in front of the khyakimlik’s office. As a result, the law enforcement officers gave up and allowed people to sell their merchandise in the market. Source: Chronicles of Turkmenistan
