AZAL Unveils Comprehensive ESG Strategy and Zero Emission Plan

Baku: AZAL is currently preparing a comprehensive ESG Strategy and Zero Emission Plan, Samir Rzayev, President at Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), said during his speech at the IATA Aviation Energy Forum, APA-Economics reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Rzayev highlighted that the document is founded on sustainable infrastructure, smart airports, renewable energy solutions, green finance, and transparent emission reporting. He stated, "Our approach is data-driven, systematic, and shaped by both macro and meso-level analyses."

He also noted that AZAL has been publishing Sustainability Reports since 2021. "Following this, we are now preparing a more detailed, data-driven Sustainability Report for 2024, which will include comprehensive emission assessments," Rzayev said. This initiative aims to further fortify AZAL's commitments towards sustainable development, environmental protection, energy transition, and ESG reporting.

Furthermore, Rzayev emphasized the importance of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a key decarbonization direction. Despite the global SAF markets still being in the formative stages, AZAL is aligning with the RefuelEU initiative. The company is assessing the potential for SAF production and supply within the region, with the intent for infrastructure and regulatory frameworks to be ready once SAF is widely adopted.

To finance the transformation, AZAL is actively engaging with financial institutions and development partners. Through green financing mechanisms, including sustainability-linked bonds and public-private partnership frameworks, the airline is promoting clean energy projects and long-term climate-smart investments. Rzayev outlined that the electrification of ground operations, implementation of renewable energy sources at airports, and integration of digital systems to enhance energy efficiency are priority areas. In addition to energy-focused initiatives, AZAL is committed to biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, preserving nearly 90,000 trees and vast green spaces around airport areas, underscoring their dedication to protecting natural habitats and maintaining ecological balance.
