Azerbaijan and China Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

BEIJING: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with Premier of the State Council of China, Li Qiang, in Beijing. During the meeting, the two leaders emphasized the evolution of their relationship, which has swiftly advanced from a strategic partnership to a comprehensive strategic partnership within less than a year.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the meeting underscored the high level of bilateral relations, as demonstrated by the Joint Declaration on strategic partnership adopted last July and the newly signed Joint Statement on comprehensive strategic partnership. Both countries highlighted the rapid growth in their economic ties, with bilateral trade turnover witnessing a 20 percent increase last year and an almost 40 percent growth in the first three months of this year, reaching $3.7 billion.

President Aliyev acknowledged China's role as Azerbaijan's number one import partner and its fourth largest trade partner. He pointed out the successful implementation of the strategic partnership declaration across various sectors, particularly in transport and logistics cooperation. The meeting also covered collaboration within international organizations, where both sides reaffirmed their mutual support for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and their commitment to a United Nations-based international relations system.

The leaders discussed the outcomes of the recent Intergovernmental Commission meeting and business forum in Baku, which led to several cooperation agreements between Azerbaijani and Chinese companies. Premier Li Qiang highlighted the growing importance of the Middle Corridor, reporting an increase in cargo transportation, and both sides explored ways to enhance the corridor's capacity.

The meeting also delved into opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy, the oil and gas sector, and the application of Chinese technologies in Azerbaijan. The potential for significant investment in these areas was emphasized. Additionally, cooperation in demining was addressed, with China ready to provide humanitarian support.

Following Azerbaijan's visa waiver for Chinese citizens, the discussion included the importance of a reciprocal agreement to boost people-to-people contacts and tourism. Agricultural cooperation, including sericulture and cotton production, was also on the agenda, alongside China's support for Azerbaijan's economic diversification policy and Digital Transformation and Development Concept.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation, with appreciation for projects by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in China, rounded out the meeting, marking a significant step forward in Azerbaijan-China relations.
