Azerbaijan Border Guards Thwart Unauthorized Excavation by Iranian Citizens at Khudafarin Bridge

Baku: Azerbaijan Border Service personnel intervened to stop unauthorized excavation activities carried out by Iranian citizens at the base structure of the Khudafarin Bridge. On May 11, around 04:00, suspicious movements by unknown individuals were observed within the service area of the "Horadiz" border detachment of the Border Troops Command of the State Border Service, specifically in the direction of Khudafarin Bridge, as reported by APA, citing the Press Center of the State Border Service.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, four individuals entered the Khudafarin Bridge from Iran and commenced excavation work on the column part of the bridge located in the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The border guards, tasked with protecting the state border, were immediately deployed to the scene and urgently informed the border representatives of Iran about the incident.

When border patrols approached, one of the individuals attempted to escape by jumping into the Araz River, while the other three retreated and were detained on the Iranian side. An inspection conducted by border officials revealed the tools used for the unauthorized excavation, which were subsequently seized.

Information from Iranian authorities confirmed that the detained individuals are citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran. A search for the individual who fell into the Araz River is currently underway, involving both Azerbaijani and Iranian parties. Operational and investigative measures continue to address the situation.
