Azerbaijan imported over 857 million cubic meters of Turkmen natural gas in 2022

In 2022, Azerbaijan imported over 857 million cubic meters of Turkmen natural gas. This was reported by the Interfax-Azerbaijan agency with reference to the Azerbaijani government.

Last year, Azerbaijan imported a total of more than 1.016 billion cubic meters of natural gas, which is almost 2 times more than in the same period of the previous year. Turkmen gas accounted for 84.3% of total natural gas imports.

Currently, Azerbaijan imports Turkmen natural gas in accordance with a tripartite gas exchange agreement between Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. The agreement provides for the supply of 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas per year to Azerbaijan through Iran.

In June 2022, the Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan, Mikayil Jabbarov, and the Minister of Oil of Iran, Javad Oudzhi, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to double the supply of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran.
