Baku: Azerbaijan has announced a significant increase in oil pipeline losses for the year 2024, as reported by the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan. In the period from January to September of this year, the country experienced a loss of 3,500 tons in its oil pipelines, marking a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. According to Azeri-Press News Agency, oil pipeline losses in Azerbaijan during the same period in the previous year amounted to 2,800 tons. Furthermore, in the first nine months of 2023, Azerbaijan transported 28.86 million tons of oil through its pipelines, representing a 3.1% decrease compared to the previous year. Of the total oil transported, 75.1% was conveyed through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil export pipeline, which itself saw a 4.34% decrease in annual throughput, delivering 21.68 million tons of oil. For additional context, in 2022, the total losses in oil pipelines amounted to 3,800 tons, which was a 31% increase from 2021. In contrast, the total oil transpo rted through the main pipelines in 2023 reached 39.75 million tons, showing a 5.2% increase from the previous year. Notably, 75.9% of this oil was transported through the BTC, which experienced a 1.49% increase in throughput, with 30.19 million tons of oil transported via the BTC pipeline last year.
