Azerbaijan State Security Service Arrests Azer Baghirov on Espionage Charges

Baku: Azerbaijan's State Security Service has arrested Azer Baghirov, who is accused of treason, and brought him back to the country. A trial regarding the preventive measure against Baghirov was held in the Sabail District Court of Baku. According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Baghirov was accused of engaging in espionage by assisting representatives of a foreign special service. He was arrested in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as a result of measures taken by Azerbaijan's State Security Service and subsequently brought back to Azerbaijan. Case materials revealed that a foreign special service involved Baghirov as an Azerbaijani citizen to conceal his participation in sabotage events planned in third countries. Baghirov is accused of deliberately harming the state's interests abroad and engaging in espionage activities to benefit the foreign special service while undermining Azerbaijan's state security. The court decided to place Baghirov in pretrial detention under Article 274, which pertains to treason, of the Criminal Code.
