The Alabay holiday was officially established in February 2021 and was celebrated together with the National Day of the Turkmen Horse.
The proposal to create a date dedicated to the Turkmen Shepherd Dog was put forward by the members of the International Association "Türkmen alabaý itleri" ("Turkmen Alabai") in August 2020. At the same time, Serdar Berdimuhamedov , the president's son, was elected head of the organization .
Alabai (also Turkmen wolfhound or Central Asian shepherd dog) is a large breed of dogs used for guarding and grazing livestock.
Several years ago, on behalf of the President, dogs began to be trained to guard the borders; Alabaev beauty contests are held in the country ; the president gives puppies of this breed to colleagues from other countries; In November 2020, a gilded monument to Alabai was erected in Ashgabat.
