During the video-selector meeting on January 7, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov raised the issue of the use of Altyn Asyr Lake in agriculture, where about 580 million cubic meters of water accumulated.
According to state news agency TDH , "the president instructed the relevant leaders, together with scientists and specialists, to study in detail the state of the lake Altyn Asyr, to accurately determine the volume of water, its quality with a view to using it for agricultural needs, especially the crops grown in the area."
Berdymukhamedov instructed to prepare proposals on the possibility of creating near the lake daikhan associations that will be engaged in the cultivation of vegetables and melon crops and fisheries.
Recall that in August 2018, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov ordered the construction of settlements around the Altyn Asyr Lake. Deputy Prime Minister Esenmyrat Orazgeldiyev, overseeing the agricultural sector , was instructed to establish enterprises for processing collected water and developing fish farming on the lake.
Construction of the artificial reservoir Altyn Asyr in the Karakum desert began in the 2000s under the first president of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov . It was decided to fill the natural depression of Karashor with the collector-drainage waters of Lebap, Mary and Ahal, for which an 800-kilometer collector was dug.
As a result of sand deposits in the reservoir, its course gradually changed. The water washed away the shores and flooded huge areas, forming lakes, which, occasionally retreating, left behind salted dead land.
