Berdymukhammedov is ready to provide prompt assistance to Uzbekistan in restoring a flood-hit region

Uzbekistan’s national information agency has previously reported that on 6 May, 2020 a telephone conversation between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukahmmedov and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev was held. According to the agency, the sides discussed the issues related to relief operations in the Sardobin water reservoir in Uzbekistan.

The Turkmen state-run agency TDH later reported about the telephone conversation of the Presidents, in the course of which President Berdymukahmmedov “expressed sincere compassion to the people of Uzbekistan in connection with the natural disaster, which has caused considerable destruction” and said that Turkmenistan is ready to provide emergency assistance in restoring the objects of infrastructures by sending equipment and personnel to the affected region.

It has not been specified whether Mirziyoyev has accepted the proposal.

Let us recall that on 27 April, 2020 Lebap velayat of Turkmenistan was seriously affected by the hurricane and subsequently by a torrential rain which flooded the houses the roofs of which had been blown away by the storm. Inhabitants of Turkmenabad and some etraps are trying to repair their houses and restore the infrastructure on their own.

State-run information agencies have ignored the hurricane and its impact. Only a week later a regional news website provided a brief coverage of relief efforts undertaken in the velayat.

On 6 May, 2020 Berdymukhammedov hosted a meeting with the heads of the provinces. Speaking with the khyakim of Lebap velayat, the President ordered to exercise rigid control over the construction of new facilities as well as agricultural works. Neither the President nor the khyakim discussed the relief operations and restoring the infrastructure in the affected area.
