Berdymukhammedov promises to build two COVID-19 testing centres in Afghanistan

On a telephone conversation was held between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov and President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

According to the state information agency TDH, the leaders of the two countries discussed the construction of TAPI gas pipeline and the electric power line Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan. Berdymukhammedov also supported the proposal put forward by Ghani to hold a trilateral video conference between the Presidents of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan to discuss the “efficiency of the transport corridor Lyapis-Lazuli”.

Discussing the fight against the spread of coronavirus, the head of state said that as part of humanitarian aid Turkmenistan is prepared to build disinfecting terminals for rail transport and cargo at the border area stations and checkpoints on the territory of Afghanistan and provide these facilities with necessary equipment. According to Berdymukhammedov, similar tunnels have been built in Turkmenistan.

TDH also reported that “Turkmenistan is building medical and education facilities in the border districts of Afghanistan from their own funds”.

Meanwhile, the website of the executive office of the President of Afghanistan reports that President Berdymukhamedov said his country plans to fund and construct two coronavirus testing centers in Torghundi and Andkhoy ports and to disinfect all trucks and freights passing through the two ports.

According to official statistics, no confirmed coronavirus cases have been recorded in Turkmenistan.
