Berdymukhammedov skips Dushanbe summit

Dushanbe hosted the fifth Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA). President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov was scheduled to arrive in the capital of Tajikistan. However, the head of Turkmenistan ignored the meeting along with Turkmenistan's foreign Minister Rashid Meredov.

The Turkmen media outlet provided no comment on the President's refusal to attend the summit.

It should be emphasized that in 2017 a dispute occurred between Turkmenistan and Tajikistan due to Dushanbe's reluctance to build its section of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) railroad. After the railroad communication between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan had been resumed, Dushanbe no longer needed to build the TAT railroad. The Ambassador of Tajikistan to Uzbekistan stated that Tajikistan intended to postpone the idea of the railroad construction via Afghanistan until better days. The statement caused an outrageous reaction of Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry, which expressed its confusion.

The conflict resulted in the fact that Turkmenistan started holding semi trucks, en route to or from or Tajikistan, at its border.
