Ashgabat hosted a meeting between the Chairman of the Mejlis (Parliament) of Turkmenistan Gulshat Mammedova and the Speaker of the State Duma of Russia Vyacheslav Volodin, who arrived in the Turkmen capital on a visit at the head of a parliamentary delegation.
The parties discussed the issues of bilateral development of inter-parliamentary cooperation and expansion of the exchange of experience in the legislative sphere. In this regard, Volodin was familiarized with the decisions taken at the joint meeting of the parliament held on January 21 this year with the participation of members of the public on the creation of the Halk Maslakhaty (People's Council) of Turkmenistan and the transition to a unicameral parliament.
Taking the opportunity, the head of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan invited Russian parliamentarians to take part in the forthcoming parliamentary elections in the country in March this year as international observers.
Then the Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation addressed the deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. Viacheslav Volodin confirmed the commitment of the Russian side to the traditionally friendly, good-neighborly dialogue with Turkmenistan, which is of a strategic nature.
Emphasizing that the dynamics of the development of bilateral relations is set by the heads of state, the Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation spoke about the need to do everything to ensure the legislative implementation of the agreements reached at the highest level. He also noted the importance of further intensifying inter-parliamentary relations, which is one of the tasks outlined in the Declaration on deepening the strategic partnership, signed by the presidents of Russia and Turkmenistan in June 2022.
In conclusion, the chairman of the State Duma of Russia stressed that the task of the parliamentarians of the two countries is to find new opportunities for rapprochement between Turkmenistan and Russia through inter-parliamentary dialogue.
Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin visited the memorial complex "People's Memory", where he laid flowers at the monument "Eternal Glory" in honor of the national heroes - defenders of the Fatherland.
