Brussels: A delegation led by Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and the Representative of the President of Azerbaijan for Climate Issues, is attending the COP30-IEA (International Energy Agency) High-Level Energy Dialogue conference in Brussels, Belgium, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, addressing the conference, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev highlighted the importance of ensuring a fair and equitable energy transition, fulfilling climate finance commitments, and strengthening Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). He discussed key outcomes of the COP29 conference hosted in Baku, emphasizing the Mitigation Work Programme's progress on cities, buildings, and urban systems, and expressed anticipation for the World Urban Forum in 2026.
COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev also spoke about the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, which set a global target to increase energy storage capacity to 1,500 gigawatts by 2030 and add or refurbish over 80 million kilometers of grids by 2040. He mentioned the COP29 Green Energy Zones and Corridors Pledge to develop renewable energy hubs and transmission lines, and the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration, endorsed by over 60 countries.
Babayev stressed the necessity of finance for implementing energy goals, highlighting the 300-billion-dollar Baku Finance Goal as a historic outcome. He noted concerns over some donors cutting aid programs, emphasizing the anxiety felt by frontline communities. Babayev called for concessional and grant-based finance, revealing plans for the Baku-to-Belem roadmap to 1.3 trillion dollars, with official consultations in Bonn next week.
The COP29 President concluded by urging colleagues to involve finance ministers, bankers, and companies in creating a more flexible and supportive financial system, which will be addressed in the Baku-to-Belem roadmap.
