Council of Elders of Azerbaijan Expels Saleh Samadov for Displaying USSR Symbols

Baku: Today, an extraordinary meeting of the Board of the Council of Elders of Azerbaijan was held, the Board said in a statement, APA reports. It was noted that the meeting revised the issue of Saleh Samedov, Chairman of the Imishli District Elders' Council, speaking under the flag of the USSR and wearing the "St. George's Ribbon", the symbol of the Russian Empire, on his chest at an event organized on May 9, 2025, in the village of Sarikhanli, Imishli, on the occasion of Victory Day over fascism, which was widely circulated in information resources.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Board decided to dismiss Saleh Samedov from his position as Chairman of the Imishli District Council of Elders and to expel him from the Council of Elders of Azerbaijan. His actions were deemed to tarnish the name of the Council and were found to be in gross violation of the Charter of the Council of Elders of Azerbaijan. The apparatus of the Council of Elders of Azerbaijan was instructed to increase oversight over the activities of local branches.
