BAKU: The courts play a key role in making decisions regarding the right to a clean environment and legal mechanisms for its protection, President of the International Association of Judges (IAJ), Duro Sessa, told reporters on the sidelines of the international conference Law and Climate in Baku today, Trend reports. ‘Today’s conference is crucial and raised a community concern. The debates revolve around the right to a clean environment and legal protections. These concerns were mostly discussed in science until recently. However, they are now jurisprudence. The conference focuses on how to implement this right in individual countries because courts make such judgments. In actual life, how does it look? How can environmental rights be enforced? Precedents are mostly from the European Court of Human Rights. However, questions remain. The right to a clean environment-is it an international human right or simply guaranteed at the national level?’ he said. According to him, the second hurdle is that environmen tal problems know no borders. ‘This is a global problem affecting many states. For me, the most important question is: will there be the political will to change the approach to this problem and develop new protection mechanisms? Because right now everyone in the world realizes that something alarming is happening. Everyone sees it, but many people prefer to stay on the sidelines, not wanting to delve into the problem,’ he added. Source: Trend News Agency
