The urge to change Iran's defense and nuclear strategy would be to Iran's detriment in the current circumstances, the former Iranian MP Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh told local media, Trend reports. According to him, amending Iran's defense and nuclear strategy could be seen as simply in Israel's interest. 'Because all countries that have obtained atomic weapons, from the US to Israel, North Korea, and Pakistan, have obtained the atomic bomb in a secret process. Experience has demonstrated that countries seeking to acquire atomic weapons, mainly countries in the Middle East, have been targeted. In my opinion, if Iran does not have an atomic bomb and atomic weapons program, then raising this issue is a very dangerous step. Because in this case a collective consensus will be formed against Iran,' he noted. Meanwhile, 39 members of the Iranian parliament have petitioned Iran's Supreme National Security Council to revise the country's defense doctrine regarding the production of nuclear weapons. Tensions have recently risen in the Middle East, mainly between Iran and Israel. Certain circles in Iran are considering various options given these tensions. Meanwhile, in January 2016, Iran and the P5+1 group (the US, Russia, China, the UK, France, and Germany) implemented the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action concerning Iran's nuclear program. In May 2018, the US announced its withdrawal from the deal and reimposed sanctions on Iran. By the end of 2020, the Iranian parliament decided to pursue a strategic plan in the nuclear sector to counter the sanctions, leading to a suspension of additional steps and the Additional Protocol as per the nuclear agreement. Consequently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) faced a reduction in monitoring capabilities by 20-30 percent. Source: Trend News Agency
