Defense Ministry Working to Extend Deployment of Overseas Troops

South Korea wants to extend the deployment of two military units in the Middle East.

The Defense Ministry submitted a motion to the National Assembly Thursday to keep the Cheonghae and Akh units overseas for another year through the end of 2017.

The Cheonghae unit is comprised of 320 personnel aboard a four-thousand ton destroyer carrying out antipiracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.

150 personnel make up the Akh Unit. It's stationed in the United Arab Emirates to protect about 25-thousand South Koreans who live and work there.
