A global coalition of human rights activists Cotton Campaign, which is dedicated to eradicating child and forced labor in cotton production, intends to arrange a protest action in the run-up to President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov's visit to New York.
The human rights activists called on the UN Secretary-General to publicly condemn Turkmenistan for using forced labour on cotton fields and demand the release of a contributor of ANT Gaspar Matalayev, who reported on the cotton harvesting campaign, and expressed concern about the retaliation against independent journalists. Moreover, the activists called for allowing independent experts to monitor the observance of human rights during cotton harvesting campaigns.
The President of Turkmenistan, who will address the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, will be held from 29 September to 2 October.
The protest action will be held on Monday, 1 October, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ralph Bunche Park, 1st Ave. and , E 42nd St, New York, NY 10017.
