Elections of deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan scheduled for March 26

The elections of deputies of the Parliament of Turkmenistan - the Mejlis - are scheduled for March 26, 2023. The relevant resolution was adopted by the Mejlis of the Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan.

The resolution notes that, in accordance with Article 81 of the Constitution of Turkmenistan, the Mejlis Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan decides: to schedule the elections of deputies of the Mejlis of the seventh convocation on Sunday, March 26, 2023.

Along with the elections of deputies of the Mejlis, the country will also hold elections for members of local representative bodies of power - velayat (regional), etrap (district), city halk maslahaty (people's councils) of the fifth convocation and Gengeshes (Councils) of the ninth convocation.

On January 11, at a joint meeting of both chambers of the Turkmen parliament - the Halk Maslakhaty (People's Council) and the Mejlis, the chairman of the upper house, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, proposed creating the country's highest body of people's power, abolishing the bicameral parliament and moving to a unicameral legislative body - the Mejlis (parliament).

To make decisions on these initiatives, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a decree on holding a joint meeting of the two chambers of the Turkmen parliament on January 21 in Ashgabat with the participation of representatives of the public.
