Energy efficiency poses vital sustainable dev’t aspect for railways – Azerbaijani official

BAKU: Emissions reduction and energy efficiency pose the first and vital aspect of sustainable development of railways, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) Rovshan Rustamov said at the event "Sustainable Transport for the Future" in Baku today, Trend reports. According to him, rail transport accounts for only one percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, making it more efficient than other modes of transport. He pointed out that railway transport accounts for 1.12 percent of total energy consumption in Azerbaijan, and greenhouse gas emissions are less than 0.5 percent. 'Our goal is to create a completely carbon-free, that is, carbon-neutral railway transport system. In 2023, 100 percent of passenger transportation and 80 percent of freight transportation were carried out using electricity,' the official added. Source: Trend News Agency
