Experts focus on water resources of the Central Asian region

At the beginning of February of this year, a regional seminar on monitoring, assessment and information exchange in the transboundary basins of Central Asia was held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. The meeting was organized by the International Water Assessment Centre (IWAC) jointly with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe with the financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation in the framework of the Green Central Asia Program.

Experts from five countries of Central Asia took part in the workshop. Turkmenistan was represented by a specialist of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment N.Bayramov, an employee of the Institute «Turkmensuvtaslama» A.Torayev and the head of the Balkan Velayat Hydrometeorology Service A.Bazarov. International organizations were represented by the head of the Program of the German Society for International Cooperation K. Milow and the environmental officer of the European Economic Commission Y.Trombitskaya.

At specialized sessions, experts discussed issues of hydrological monitoring and regulation of water quality in Central Asia, exchanged information on problems in the transboundary basins of the region, noted the importance of regional cooperation on emerging issues.

Specialist of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment N.Bayramov made a presentation on «Water Resources of Turkmenistan» at the seminar. In turn, he also noted that serious attention is paid to hydrological monitoring of water resources in the republic. Specialists make short-term and long-term forecasts. He also noted that with specialists from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Russia, on the basis of bilateral agreements, a regular operational exchange of hydrological data is carried out.

At the end of the exchange of views, the leading experts unanimously adopted the final document, which declares promising areas of activity for specialists responsible for monitoring water resources and the need for closer cooperation in this direction.
