At about 7 p.m. on Thursday, 29 December, a fire broke out in the culture centre located on Oguzkhan street, which is quite popular with the residents of the Turkmen capital, totally destroying the interior premises. According to reports, a performance was underway on stage and the concert hall was almost full.
The streets adjacent to the Movie and Concert Hall were cordoned off because of the fire and all spectators from the hall were evacuated to the street. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Let us recall that several days before the fire broke out, on 25 December, the President of Turkmenistan had severely reprimanded and issued a final written warning to the Interior Minister Iskander Mulikov for the unsatisfactory performance of his responsibilities and failure to fulfill assignments of the Turkmen President to ensure fire safety regulations. Moreover, pursuant to the Presidential ruling, deputy khyakim of Ashgabat Mukhammedgeldy Yusupov was relieved from his post for failure to ensure fire safety works in Ashgabat and for grave shortcomings in his work.
We are receiving reports that classical music concerts were successfully held in the Movie and Concert Hall Turkmenistan' on a regular basis, including performances of the Youth Chamber Orchestra led by Rasul Klychev, as well as concerts of renowned pop singers.
The Movie and Concert Hall had been previously named after S. Niyazov's mother Gurbansoltan-edje.
The concert hall is closed for the time being and no restoration or renovation works are underway.
