German Foreign Ministry thanks Turkmenistan for opening an air corridor for the evacuation of citizens from Afghanistan

a telephone conversation took place between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, and the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Heiko Maas .

According to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry, Meas, on behalf of the German government, expressed deep gratitude for the cooperation of Turkmenistan in ensuring flights of aircraft in order to evacuate citizens from Afghanistan.

"The immediate granting of permission by Turkmenistan to use its airspace has become a decisive factor in the effective evacuation of people," the foreign ministry of Turkmenistan quoted Meas as saying.

In addition, the officials discussed bilateral cooperation in the political-diplomatic, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres, and also agreed to continue the dialogue on the Afghan problem.

The German Foreign Ministry does not give details of the negotiations.

On August 19, the Foreign Ministry announced that Turkmenistan had provided its airspace for the evacuation of foreign citizens from Afghanistan,

• On August 29, in a conversation with President of the European Council Charles Michel, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov refused to accept Afghan refugees due to the danger of the spread of COVID-19.
