Green island in the heart of White city: New Life of Ashgabat botanic garden

Ashgabat residents have received wonderful present to the Day of the city – renewed Botanic Garden, which is under jurisdiction of Turkmen Agricultural University, has been opened for visitors. Having received features of city park, it has become a place of attraction for family gathering of Ashgabat residents and took place in top of attractions of Turkmen capital.

People can relax after a long walk in the garden in cosy gazebos or at benches or to chat with friends over a cup of coffee and tea and have some snacks in the café. In the future, it is planned to open shop selling trees samplings and indoor plants.

Nevertheless, cultural and educational purpose is not the only of directions of activity of botanic gardens. Modern botanic garden is a unique eco-social resource of urban development and multifunctional organism participating in solution of number of objectives.

Despite the changes in Ashgabat Botanic Garden, it has not touched the staff of scientific personnel.

Nurseries engaged in study of agriculture of any plant including exotic species such as date tree (Phoenix) or stevia (Stevia).

Developed technology for cultivation of papaya (Carica papaya) in greenhouses is a special pride of specialists of the garden. By taste, these fruits of melon tree are similar to those cultivated in subtropical zones of Central and South America. The trunk and leaves of papaya are rich with healing juice and, probably, are waiting for the moment when Turkmen pharmacologists will show interest in it. Papaya is reproduced by seeds.

One can see the only in Turkmenistan relic tree of Ginkgo Biloba, which is growing good and works on its reproduction are carried out.

Juniper dated by 1902 is the oldest tree in collection arboretum. Here is a question comes – if Ashgabat Botanic Garden was opened in 1929, how the tree could be here in 1902?Senior scientists Ekaterina Kuroshina can answer this question. According to her, the juniper was widely used for fortifying sands along the railways back then. From her words, Botanic Garden was opened on the base of former forest nursery and the elder of the garden is from that nursery, which is indicated by the sign with the date of its origin.

Eight species of palm trees is the main attraction of Ashgabat Botanic Garden Conservatory. Previously, two palm trees have grown so tall that the roof of the Conservatory has to be lifted by 15 meters. Now, the top of the trees have reached to dome again. Today, these exotic trees are 73 years old. Some trees are still bearing fruits. It is known, that they grow up to 100 and more years in natural environment. How long will they live in Ashgabat? Time will give answer to that question.

Head of biological observation and seed bank department Gulzar Bazarova introduce with pride the section of permanent blossoming – in any season, something is in bloom at this place, either shrubs, trees, annual and perennial flowers. These days, colourful island is bright with yellow buttercups, elite rose species, flowers of honeysuckle and cactuses, poppy seeds and petunia…After some time, it will be replaced with other flowers.

Gulzar Bazarova is an author of another expositional section of group of succulents – the plants, which are adapted to dry conditions of African deserts. It includes various species of aloe, collection of sansiveria, representatives of Euphorbiaceae and Crassulaceae families.

Sections with botanic and historical expositions specific for different geographic latitudes, in which creation scientific personnel of Saint Petersburg, Tbilissi and Sochi Botanic gardens provided great assistance, remain unchanged. International cooperation is developed at present as well.

There is a section of local flora. By the way, Turkmen section is the most picturesque part of the garden in early spring. It has tulips, field poppies, wild onion, eremerus, white stars of Ornithogalum.

Floristic harmony, which we enjoy, and aesthetic pleasure, which we receive visiting Ashgabat Botanic Garden, is the result of work of teamwork of scientists, landscape designers and other personnel. Owing to studies, enthusiasm and painstaking work of people, conceptual unity of variety of elements making such comprehensive concept as Botanic Garden is achieved.
