Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov became a member of the Council of Elders of the Organization of Turkic States

The ex-president of Turkmenistan, chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty Milli Gengesha Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov became a member of the Council of Elders (OTG) as an elder of Turkmenistan. This was reported on April 15 on the UTC website .

In September 2019, in connection with the celebration of the 28th anniversary of the independence of Turkmenistan, as well as at the request of citizens, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received the title of Honorary Elder of the People (“Hormatly il ýasulusy”).

The UTC Secretariat believes that the ex-president will further enrich the potential of the Council of Elders with his wisdom, experience and knowledge, and will also increase the authority of the Organization.

"The participation of Berdimuhamedov in the Council of Elders, which is an advisory body of the Organization of Turkic States, will give a new impetus to Turkmenistan's contribution to deepening multifaceted cooperation in the Turkic world in the political, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres," the news release says.

The State Information Agency TDH has not announced the appointment yet. On April 1, the ex-president went on vacation for an indefinite period.

• On March 10, Chairman of the UTC Council of Elders Binali Yildirim arrived in Turkmenistan and held meetings with Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov .

• On February 26, Berdimuhamedov, in a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan , expressed interest in participating as a member in the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic Speaking Countries (TURKPA) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkic Countries.

• In November 2021, Turkmenistan was admitted to the UTC as an observer.
