On 29 September the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres met with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and emphasized Ashgabat's contribution in stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan, TASS reports with reference to the UN public affairs office.
The Secretary General highly praised Turkmenistan's initiatives in supporting peace and development in Afghanistan, � the statement says. It is also reported that Gutteres and Berdymukhammedov discussed the developments in the region.
Guterres thanked Turkmenistan for its cooperation with the United Nations, particularly its continued support for the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and the United Nations Country Team in Turkmenistan, � the document says. The Secretary General and the President discussed Turkmenistan's initiatives in support of preventive diplomacy, the infrastructure projects in the region and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
During his speech at the session of the UN General Assembly on 29 September President Berdymukhammedov spoke about food security and called on providing support to Afghanistan in the construction of the TAPI gas pipeline.
On 12 September the news agency Reuters reported that pursuant to the report by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Turkmenistan is listed among 38 countries which carried out reprisals of residents for cooperating with international organizations, including the UN, on human rights.
