Heydar Aliyev played unique role in Baikal-Amur Mainline project – Leonid Slutsky

SHUSHA: Heydar Aliyev played a crucial role in the development of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) project, said Leonid Slutsky, head of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), in an interview with Trend, CBC TV, and AzTV. "He was essentially the coordinator, overseer, and leader of the project. While Yefim Vladimirovich Basin, a Hero of Socialist Labor and another legendary figure, was officially the head of BAM construction, it was Heydar Aliyev who provided the highest level of coordination. Many of today's top leaders, like Igor Levitin, who served as Russia's Transport Minister for eight years and is now an advisor to the Russian President, also worked on the BAM. Even though Levitin was just a military commandant staffer at the time, years later, Heydar Aliyev still remembered him. He spent a great deal of time on-site, directly overseeing the construction of the BAM. He wasn't just managing things from Moscow - he was on the ground, making sure the project got done. Thanks to Heydar Aliyev, the BAM was completed in record time," Slutsky remarked. He added that throughout his various roles, including as First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, Heydar Aliyev dedicated immense effort to projects that have since become historic and iconic. "The BAM is still in operation today and remains a critical part of Russia's railway system. Heydar Aliyev's contribution to this project is truly unique. Everyone involved with BAM, as well as their children and future generations, will always remember Heydar Aliyev when they think of the construction of this monumental railway," Slutsky concluded.
