According to the 2021 census, the results of which were published at the beginning of the month, 41,338 Turkmen live in Russia (people who indicated their nationality as Turkmen in the questionnaire). This is 12% more than according to the results of the 2010 census, when 36,885 Turkmen lived in Russia, Meteozhurnal reports .
According to the data for 2021, there are significantly more men (22,795) among Turkmens than women (18,543).
Data on the regions of residence of ethnic Turkmens indicate that the largest diaspora lives in the Stavropol Territory - 15,100 people. At the same time, however, there is no increase in the number of Turkmens here. In 2010, almost the same number of Turkmens lived in the Stavropol Territory - 15,048 people.
Most of all, the number of Turkmens, 2.6 times, increased in Tatarstan - up to 2,514 people.
According to the data on the age division, most of the Turkmens living in Russia are from 20 to 29 years old (13,142 people). At the same time, children under 9 years old are the least - 4,172 children.
Considering all these data, it can be assumed that the increase in the number of ethnic Turkmens is due to the migration of young single men to Russia.
As for the knowledge of Turkmen and Russian, out of the total number of Turkmens (41,338), 39,813 speak Russian (96.3%). At the same time, only 27,037 people speak Turkmen in Russia (these are not necessarily ethnic Turkmens). In everyday life, only 20,967 people use it.
There is only one Turkmen school in Russia, it is located in the Astrakhan region and was built at the expense of Turkmenistan. Here teachers from Turkmenistan teach the Turkmen language and literature.
Previously, schools with the teaching of the Turkmen language were in the Stavropol Territory, in places densely populated by Turkmens, but subsequently the teaching of the Turkmen language came to naught due to the lack of teaching staff.
