On October 14, an online meeting of the Government Commission on Turkmenistan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held, the country's Foreign Ministry reported .
The Turkmen delegation, which included the heads and representatives of the relevant ministries and departments, was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Vepa Khadzhiyev .
The parties discussed the draft work plan for 2021-2022 on the preparation of the Memorandum of the foreign trade regime of Turkmenistan , and also studied the issue of the country's accession to the WTO as an observer during the XII WTO Ministerial Conference, which will be held in Geneva from November 30 to December 3.
It is noted that the full accession of Turkmenistan is provided for in the Foreign Trade Strategy for 2021-2030.
Turkmenistan has been discussing the issue of joining the WTO since 2016. The country's authorities expect this to attract foreign investment and provide guarantees and transparency for investors.
In September 2020, the OSCE held a seminar for representatives of the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Finance on the topic “Membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a balance of rights and obligations”.
