Istanbul court overturns decision to deport Turkmen activist

On June 15, a court in Istanbul overturned the decision to deport 34-year-old Turkmen citizen Bayram Allaliev , the Turkmen Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (THF) reports.

The activist was detained in October last year at the office of the Turkish Migration Service in Istanbul, where he was called to renew his residence permit. It turned out that Turkmenistan was looking for him through Interpol – in his homeland, the authorities accuse the man of fraud. Allaliev was sent to the police station, and then to the deportation center.

At the same time, more than 33 international non-governmental organizations signed a statement in support of Turkmen activists. Human rights activists urged the Turkish authorities to release Turkmen citizens who ended up in deportation centers and give them the opportunity to regulate their status in Turkey, as well as to investigate cases of attacks and threats against Turkmen activists in the country.

In November 2021, Allalyev was released, but the procedure for considering the issue of his deportation continued. Then he got into a road accident. The culprit of the accident fled the scene, but the police know his name. Allaliev was hospitalized and underwent treatment for several months.

Bayram Allaliev actively participated in dissident chats, where the Turkmen regime is criticized for refusing to renew and exchange passports at consular services abroad, suppressing freedom of speech, restricting freedom of movement, and unwillingness to recognize the presence of coronavirus in the country.

The activist also participated in the work of the Istanbul-based Oguz Culture, Cooperation and Education Society. His name was on the list of 25 Turkmen activists wanted by the Turkish police at the request of Ashgabat. In another official document signed by the Consul General of Turkmenistan in Istanbul M. Seitmamedov , sent to the Turkish authorities, the names of 13 activists are listed, number 12 is Allalyev’s passport data.

According to the TFH, Bayram Allaliev has now applied to the Turkish authorities with a request to grant him refugee status.
