Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office Refused to Initiate Case Against Turkmen Activists According to Statement of Turkmenistan’s Consulate

In August 2022, Turkmen activists tried to send a written appeal to the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov through the consulate in Istanbul, but they were beaten by the representatives of the diplomatic mission.

As reported on the website of the Turkmen Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (THF), on the same day the victims applied to the prosecutor's office. The incident is currently under investigation.

At the same time, employees of the consulate of Turkmenistan filed a counterclaim against three activists who took part in the action. What they were accused of is not specified, but, according to the THF, in early January it became known that the Istanbul prosecutor's office refused to consider the complaint of Turkmen diplomats, considering it unfounded. The Turkish authorities transmitted this information to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

Human rights activists suggest that such incidents, when employees of foreign embassies try to lure activists into the building of diplomatic missions under various pretexts, cause concern for the Turkish public, since journalist Jamil Khashoggi was previously killed in this way in the Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul .

Recall that the incident occurred on August 16. Turkmen activists, accompanied by two Turkish human rights activists and a lawyer, tried to send a written appeal to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov through the Turkmen consulate in Istanbul, but they were attacked by six employees of the mission. One of them was identified as Merdan Mustakov .

38-year-old Atamurad Saparov received serious injuries from a blow to the head with a heavy object . He needed medical attention.
