Japan and UNDP will help Turkmenistan reduce seismic risks

The Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, together with the Mejlis, began work to reduce seismic risks in areas of high seismic risk of the country. This was reported to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the Cabinet meeting on January 18.

According to the state news agency TDH , Turkmen specialists in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency are working on the project "Improving the system of seismological observations in the city of Ashgabat and around it."

Also within the framework of the joint project with the United Nations Development Program, Strengthening the National Capacity of Turkmenistan for Seismic Risk Assessment, Prevention and Response to Potential Earthquakes, a forecasting and monitoring strategy is being developed in this area.

Note that Turkmenistan is in a seismic zone. Only last year several earthquakes occurred in the country .

From 5 to 6 October 1948, one of the most devastating catastrophes in the world occurred in the country - the Ashgabat earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Richter scale, during which, besides Ashgabat, a large number of settlements in nearby areas were affected. Since then, every October 6, the Day of Remembrance is held in the country .
