Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev signed a law on ratification of the Treaty with Turkmenistan on the delimitation of the border between states, Akorda’s press service reported on November 2.
“The head of state signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On ratification of the Treaty between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan on the delimitation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border and the delimitation of adjacent sections of fishing zones on the Caspian Sea,” the information message says.
On October 20, the Parliament of Kazakhstan approved the ratification of the Agreement. It was developed in order to determine the line of the state border between the countries along the Caspian Sea and delimitation of fishing zones, Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbaev said at a parliamentary meeting .
“The law makes it possible to complete the process of delimitation of the state border between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, legally fixing the state borders in the Caspian Sea. The law will further strengthen good neighborly relations between the two countries and develop mutually beneficial cooperation,” Ashimbayev emphasized.
As noted by the Kazakhstanskaya Pravda publication, the adoption of the agreement will eliminate possible prerequisites for the emergence of disputes with Turkmenistan regarding the delimitation of the Caspian Sea between the two states, increase the investment attractiveness of the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea and provide favorable conditions for the exercise of sovereign rights to subsoil use and fishing of aquatic biological resources.
The total length of the Turkmen-Kazakh state border is about 458.3 km. The agreement between Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan on the delimitation and process of demarcation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border was signed by the heads of the two states on July 5, 2001 in Astana. On April 18, 2017, the Interstate Agreement on the demarcation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border was signed there. The adoption of the Agreement on the regime of the border following the state visit of the President of Kazakhstan to Ashgabat on October 25, 2021 was the legal completion of work on this issue.
