Kyrgyz farmers outraged at imports of cheap tomatoes from Turkmenistan

At a meeting on December 9, Kyrgyz parliament deputy Erkin Zholdoshaliev announced the need to support domestic farmers, reports edition Tazabek.

“Our producers say that they cannot work under such conditions, since cheap products have begun to be imported. Now cheap tomatoes are imported to Kyrgyzstan from Turkmenistan. Who checks their quality? ”He asked.

The MP also believes that it is necessary to check the quality of the imported product, since Turkmenistan is not a member of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Turkmenistan actively exports tomatoes. The main buyers in 2020 were the EAEU countries. The volume of exports to Kazakhstan (26.7%), Kyrgyzstan (10.1%) and Russia (63.2%) in 2020 amounted to 33.78 thousand tons with a total value of $ 37.6 million. This is 60% more than in 2019. For four months of 2021, 55% of the total procurement volume was supplied from Turkmenistan to Kyrgyzstan .

In the first eight months of 2021, Turkmenistan exported 32 thousand tons of greenhouse tomatoes to Russia, which is almost twice (92%) more than in the same period last year.
