Monuments in Ashgabat’s roundabouts to be built despite the recession

Due to the economic recession, on 3 April, 2020 President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov charged Deputy Prime Minister overseeing construction and industry Shamukhammet Durdylyev with the task of reviewing construction plans and building only “the most essential facilities of social and community significance”.

The pro-governmental Turkmen media outlet Arzuw reports that two monuments, which will be installed in roundabouts of Ashgabat, are scheduled to be built despite the economic downturn.

One of them is the monument to the bicycle which was inspected by the President the previous day. It is scheduled to be commissioned in May, 2020, in the run-up to the Day of Bicycle, which is celebrated on 3 June. The second monument is a cube with octagonal stars on the edges, which reminds the Ashgabat registrar’s office with a similar structure installed on the roof. The construction works are scheduled to be completed by September 2020.

It should be mentioned that the construction company «Nusay yollary», owned by the President’s brother-in-law, are carrying out the construction works for the second monument. The project will be partially funded by local entrepreneurs, members of Turkmenistan’s Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

The news outlet highlights that for the time being over 20 similar monuments have been built at the intersection of the central streets of the city.

Let us recall that ahead of the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence, which will be marked in September 2021, the construction of a 300 meter monument is scheduled to be completed in Ashgabat.
