New abstract monuments opened in Ashgabat

Six new monuments installed on roundabouts in Ashgabat were opened on Saturday, 10 December. According to the website Gundogar, a chiseled tower Zemin (translated as the Earth) has been installed at the intersection of Andalib and 10 yil Abadanchylyk avenues. As envisioned by the creators, the cellular netlike design of the globe is intended as a reminder about the fragility of the Earth.

The composition Ebedilik (Eternity) is located at the intersection of Andalib avenue and Yunus Emre street. It simultaneously depicts the wheel of life and an eight curve as symbols of eternity.

The sculpture Jebeslik (unity) is located at the intersection of Andalib avenue and Atamurad Niyazov avenue. It features streams merging into a powerful torrent.

The composition Osush (progress, growth and development) is located at the intersection of Andalib and Galkynysh avenues.

The composition Erkanalyk (will, freedom) depicting swallows and symbolizing free flight of spirit and thought is located at the intersection of Andalib and Magtymguly avenues.

The composition Chemen (bouquet), symbolizing prosperity, success, and unity as well as gratitude and admiration, is located at the intersection of Magtymguly and Aba Annaev avenues.

All the monuments are made in a rather weird abstract manner. The locals who do not see anything in common between the shape of the sculpture and its title, are coming up with their own names, primarily using curse words.

The students of the Arts Academy were lined up around the monuments. The artists usually draw large objects from some distance but the students were placed very close to the objects to make it more convenient to take a photo.

Let us recall that monument projects were presented to the President in March 2016. However, in the original designs almost all the monuments looked different.
