Ombudsman: Failure to provide Azerbaijan with accurate maps of minefields seriously hinders safe return of former IDPs

‘Today, a mine planted by Armenia in the village of Gizilhajili, Gazakh district, exploded, injuring three civilians and one military serviceman,’ said Sabina Aliyeva, Azerbaijan’s Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) as she commented on a mine explosion in Gizilhajili, Gazakh district. ‘Gizilhajili village was returned to Azerbaijan based on the agreement reached on April 19, 2024, regarding the delimitation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia border. Apparently, Armenia keeps up its mine terrorism policy and does not end its violent actions that endanger the life and health of the population even after the delimitation. We once again recall that the failure to provide Azerbaijan with accurate maps of minefields planted in our territories seriously hinders the safe return of former IDPs to their lands, the provision of the right to live in a healthy environment, the border delimitation process, and the restoration and construction works carried out in the region. The international community should pressure A rmenia to provide reliable mine maps to Azerbaijani people and should speak out against the mine terrorism of this country,’ Sabina Abdullayeva added.
