Opposition Threatens Dismissal Motion for Defense Minister Over Military Deal

The main opposition Democratic Party has warned it will submit a motion for the dismissal or impeachment of Defense Minister Han Min-koo if the government signs a military intelligence sharing deal with Japan.

Floor Leader Woo Sang-ho issued the warning Monday during the party's Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly.

Party spokesman Yoon Kwan-seok said as the deal must win parliamentary ratification, the main opposition will mobilize all possible means to nullify it, including presenting a motion to dismiss the defense minister.

Floor Leader Park Jie-won of the minor opposition People's Party also warned that the opposition bloc will launch discussions on the motion if the deal is signed.

A party spokesman said at a news briefing that the government is rushing to conclude the sensitive deal amid political turmoil over the influence-peddling scandal involving President Park Geun-hye's longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil.
