The campaign to combat private taxis rendering passenger transportation services led to the fact that state-run taxis are unable to handle the increasing number of customers.
Correspondents of Chronicles of Turkmenistan report that owing to the shortage of taxis in Ashgabat, on 14 April almost the entire taxi fleet, which is made up of over a dozen vehicles, was transferred from Turkmenbashi.
According to some unconfirmed reports, the new public company will be opened shortly to render public transportation and taxi services. The company is expected to be headed by a member of the President's family. This is how the head of the state decided to get rid of competition represented by private taxi drivers, whose services are in great demand among residents.
Let us recall at the session of the Security Council held on 4 April the President of Turkmenistan issued a reprimand with final warning to Minister of the Interior Isgender Mulikov after Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov had pinpointed a lot of taxi drivers rendering passenger transportation services without relevant licenses.
