For the first time ever, South Korea’s president is sitting out an annual APEC Leaders’ Summit.
Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn left Friday for the summit in Peru, where he will represent the Park Geun-hye administration.
Among the leaders attending the weekend gathering are U.S. President Barack Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
No bilateral talks are scheduled with the prime minister at this point.
Hwang is scheduled to meet in the Peruvian capital, Lima, with that country’s first Vice President Martin Alberto Vizcarra Cornejo to discuss a wide range of issues including national defense, and the North Korean nuclear issue.
