BAKU: President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan delivered an address to the nation, marking the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis and the New Year, outlining the country’s achievements in 2024 and addressing regional tensions, particularly concerning Armenia’s militarization.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev emphasized Azerbaijan’s significant progress over the past year, including the peaceful reclamation of four villages in the Gazakh district, previously occupied since the early 1990s. He highlighted the increase in Azerbaijan’s international standing, economic growth, and military strength, noting that these developments have been achieved while maintaining domestic stability. Aliyev reiterated the importance of the liberation of territories, asserting that Azerbaijan’s strategic and concerted efforts had restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The President expressed concern over Armenia’s continued armament efforts, describing them as a regional threat. He warned tha
t the militarization could disrupt peace and stability in the South Caucasus. In response, Azerbaijan has increased its military budget to 8.4 billion manats to ensure defense readiness. Aliyev criticized foreign influences that embolden Armenia’s aggressive policies and reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to peace and cooperation in the region.
Aliyev also detailed the nation’s economic achievements, including a 4 percent rise in GDP and substantial growth in non-oil sectors. He reported an increase in foreign exchange reserves to over 72 billion dollars, while foreign debt has decreased to 5.2 billion dollars. These economic milestones enable Azerbaijan to fund social projects, including a fifth social package in the coming year, with an allocation of 7.5 billion manats.
The President announced upcoming increases in the minimum wage and pension, set to rise by 14-15 percent in 2025, underscoring the government’s focus on improving citizens’ welfare despite extensive investment projects. He also highlighted
the success of COP29, the largest international event hosted by Azerbaijan, which demonstrated the country’s potential and resilience against negative campaigns from certain Western entities.
Aliyev concluded by expressing gratitude for the public’s trust and support in the recent presidential election, reaffirming his commitment to leading Azerbaijan along a path of progress and sovereignty. He extended holiday greetings to Azerbaijanis worldwide, emphasizing unity and prosperity for the nation.
